Greyrock State Penitentiary, better known by those who now call it home as the Compound. Greyrock was formerly a medium security federal prison located in the state of Oregon. It was located about thirty minutes outside of Eugene. It is called the compound by the group who calls it home, a safe haven away from the onslaught of the walking dead. They are a group of less than savory individuals that refer too themselves as the Vanguard.
The group is here for one thing… Too use everyone else up so that they may survive. They seem to revel in their more base natures, pillaging what is left of the world one person at a time. The group comes from various walks of unsavory life. Mercenary groups, inmates, biker gangs, that cop that really should have been fired a long time ago, and just people in general who relish in the lack of laws and enforcement. Sure, they have some code for why they do things the way they do and at times they like to think there is an actual purpose for the way they behave but in the end there isn't.
The truth of the matter is that the prison didn't even belong too the Vanguard at first. Antonio took advantage of the good graces of the group that did the work of clearing out the prison and took over. Most of that original group are dead, killed by the Vanguard or shoved back out into the world and killed by the undead. Antonio, a former mercenary, leads the group with several sergeants beneath him that help run things and make sure people stay in line. He rules his community through fear, intimidation and brutality. Some among those in his community have come to respect him and respect his way of leadership and others... Others have just come to fear him. But they let that fear guide them. That or the relative safety the community provides them. After all, it has to be better then being thrown back out into the world right? Thrown back out to face the undead with nothing but your hands and a prayer?
The prison provided a built in protection against the walking dead in the form of razor wire tipped fences and guard towers. They have since built further defenses meant to keep the walking dead, and more importantly other people, out. They have stockpiled guns, ammunition and other weapons. They have scavenged and fortified vehicles. The guard towers are well protected.
The compound has both a working M1 Abrams tank and an armored M901 personnel carrier that they located at a nearby National Guard armory stored away and still running with very little wrenching required. Both are painted in an older model National Guard pain scheme once used by the Army at large. Both run with the Abrams having a very limited amount of 120mm main gun shells available with more surprisingly hard to find. It is equipped with a terrorizing M2 Browning machine gun that fires a .50 caliber round. The point being that they have two armored vehicles for protection of their compound. They both sit just inside the fenced in yard, staring ominously out at the world, laying in wait for anyone that might try and attack the place.
